A Bad Winter

Jan

After the war in 1945 and 1946 we got through with all the shortages but the winter of 1947 was an absolute horror, there was no coal, no loft insulation so the snow came through the roof. That was the winter that went on until about April. The pipes were all frozen we couldn't get water. The plumbers were all very busy.

I was working 3 miles from where I live and I couldn't get through to work and after 3-4 days I ended up walking to work behind the snowplough. We got stuck trying to deliver groceries in the van and had to get the tractor from a farm to pull us out. We ended up delivering some on a sledge.
