Lighting and Darkness

We lived with candles then because we had no electricity upstairs. We had gas downstairs for cooking. We just went upstairs carrying a candle, wax dripping off, the house so perishing cold that you could see your breath.

We had candles upstairs and I was frightened of the dark and wanted my brother to come up to the loo with me but he wouldn't. Instead he gave me a torch and a gun and said "If you meet anybody shoot them". I sat upstairs on the loo terrified.

There was always going to be a bogeyman upstairs.
